Summary

Revisiting the dark early days of the German occupation in France in this haunting novel--a love story and a tale of high-stakes danger and incomparable courage--about a young American heiress who helps artists hunted by the Nazis escape from war-torn Europe。

Wealthy, beautiful Naneé was born with a spirit of adventure。 For her, learning to fly is freedom。 When German tanks roll across the border and into Paris, this woman with an adorable dog and a generous heart joins the resistance。 Known as the Postmistress because she delivers information to those in hiding, Naneé uses her charms and skill to house the hunted and deliver them to safety。

Photographer Edouard Moss has escaped Germany with his young daughter only to be interned in a French labor camp。 His life collides with Naneé's in this sweeping tale of romance and danger set in a world aflame with personal and political passion。

Inspired by the real life Chicago heiress Mary Jayne Gold, who worked with American journalist Varian Fry to smuggle artists and intellectuals out of France, The Postmistress of Paris is the haunting story of an indomitable woman whose strength, bravery, and love is a beacon of hope in a time of terror。

Boy, I kind of fell for these characters and grew to love them。 Stories inspired by real people during WWII who fought their own version of the war by being in harm’s way and helping refugees escape always amaze me。

Interesting story but there were some slow parts and it felt like a long book。

3。5 ⭐️ the last half of the book was great, but the first half I struggled to find engaging。 I’m glad I finished it because the last half I couldn’t put down。 It was interesting to read about Mary Gold who the book was based on and how many details were historical in the book。

This is the slowest, most drawn out, annoying book ever。 What could have been said in 100 pages is extended ad nauseum。 The book doesn't even know what it wants to be--thriller? Love story? Historical Fiction is my absolute favorite genre and I will read anything set during WWII。 I had high hopes for this one, but unfortunately, it fell flat for me。 It felt way too long, dry, and sometimes boring。 I didn't think the romance aspect added anything, in fact, it felt forced and unbelievable。 The characters were just okay for me - I hoped to connect more to the female lead - Nanae (so much is written about the men who sacrificed so much, but not the women)。There are plenty of really gre Historical Fiction is my absolute favorite genre and I will read anything set during WWII。 I had high hopes for this one, but unfortunately, it fell flat for me。 It felt way too long, dry, and sometimes boring。 I didn't think the romance aspect added anything, in fact, it felt forced and unbelievable。 The characters were just okay for me - I hoped to connect more to the female lead - Nanae (so much is written about the men who sacrificed so much, but not the women)。There are plenty of really great reviews - this just wasn't for me。 。。。more

Really well done audio book

Well written, though a little slow at times。 Also felt that some things were not accurate。 Was it really possible for the main character to have a "plush terry robe" in the midst of the war? Some things seemed too easy for the time。 Otherwise, good character development individually as well as relationships。 Well written, though a little slow at times。 Also felt that some things were not accurate。 Was it really possible for the main character to have a "plush terry robe" in the midst of the war? Excellent historical novel based on the real life of Mary Jayne Gold, a wealthy American who joined the French resistance in WWII。 Her struggle to help a Jewish artist and his young daughter escape the Nazis forms the heart of this gripping and beautifully told story。 The symbolism of flying as freedom bookends the story and appears throughout。As an artist, I found the passages about incarcerated artists continuing to make art in any way they could very inspiring。 Making art is one way to keep d Excellent historical novel based on the real life of Mary Jayne Gold, a wealthy American who joined the French resistance in WWII。 Her struggle to help a Jewish artist and his young daughter escape the Nazis forms the heart of this gripping and beautifully told story。 The symbolism of flying as freedom bookends the story and appears throughout。As an artist, I found the passages about incarcerated artists continuing to make art in any way they could very inspiring。 Making art is one way to keep dignity and hope alive in horrible circumstances。 "Even in the darkest times。。。the men kept making art and music。。。It was how they stayed alive。 How they helped the world right itself。"As a woman, I appreciated the strong female lead who was uniquely equipped to accomplish what men could not in that era。 "Men so seldom imagine us capable of the things we're capable of。" 。。。more

Nanee Gold is an American living in France and as Hitler invades she joins the Resistance to deliver information to those in hiding to help them escape the Nazis。 Clayton gives the reader a good historical perspective on what life for many people was like during the early days of the German occupation of France。 The read is light but informative。

I enjoyed this book more than I expected。 It explores WWII France but from a different angle than just doom and gloom。 Hope is the underlying theme of this book, and it’s really refreshing to hear stories of hope in the face of adversity。 Without giving too much away, it’s a story about friendship and charity, but it’s also a story about love and loss。 Through the eyes of characters we get to know really intimately, we’re thrown into this historic and terrifying slice of history and walk through I enjoyed this book more than I expected。 It explores WWII France but from a different angle than just doom and gloom。 Hope is the underlying theme of this book, and it’s really refreshing to hear stories of hope in the face of adversity。 Without giving too much away, it’s a story about friendship and charity, but it’s also a story about love and loss。 Through the eyes of characters we get to know really intimately, we’re thrown into this historic and terrifying slice of history and walk through it with them。 It’s a journey worth taking, and it’s a book that’ll pull at your heartstrings。 That said, it was a surprisingly nice read but I probably wouldn’t pick it up again。 The love story didn’t really convince me, and some day-to-day details probably could have been trimmed。 。。。more

I'm a sucker for a tragic inspirational historical story, and this one did not disappoint。 After finishing the audiobook, I've been researching the life that inspired this story。 Those are the true heroes。 I'm a sucker for a tragic inspirational historical story, and this one did not disappoint。 After finishing the audiobook, I've been researching the life that inspired this story。 Those are the true heroes。 。。。more

Great historical fiction based on an American who aided refugees in France。 Includes a love story and details of escapes that are so remarkable that I cannot imagine the courage of the escapees and those who helped them。

I am so amazed by the stories that are coming from WW 2。 As an evil man was trying to eliminate groups of people there was always the quest to stall, thwart, and stop his insane ideology by helping people to escape from his tyranny。 Though it was not a story that grabbed me or kept me rivited to find what may happened next。 Also I found it being a bit wordy or too long。 It is a good listen, well researched, and interesting story confirming that there will always be a people to fight for other。

The overall story is interesting but really struggled to get into this one。 Maybe it was the narrator? Slow start, but got pretty suspenseful toward the end。 Very happy with the ending; not an obvious conclusion to the book。

While based upon remarkable people who selflessly helped refugees during WWII I did not enjoy the book。 I found the writing tedious and trite。

This was thick。 Physically but also emotionally。 It was definitely slow to start and I couldn’t tell what was important to remember or just casually mentioned to keep the plot going。 Women in WW2 Europe, occupied France edition vibes。 Focuses on 3 different characters and you get their storyline at different intervals。 It’s decent。 Glad I read it but nothing crazy stands out。

I was really excited when I began this book。 The summary end them words written about it gave me an impression。 It was truly a classic。 It was OK, not a classic。Luki, T and Nanee who are all memorable characters who injected energy into the story。 However, I needed a little more energy and a little more action。I don’t recommend this book。

A decent read for me。 The characters are complicated and detailed, the scenes richly described。 It made the cardinal sin of switching points of view frequently, which they only made more irritable by having different narrators on the audio book。 Why do they do that? Having a character's voice portrayed both by a male and female reader in the same book only takes me out of the story。Knowing nothing about Mary Jayne Gold, the historical inaccuracies did not bother me while reading like in other re A decent read for me。 The characters are complicated and detailed, the scenes richly described。 It made the cardinal sin of switching points of view frequently, which they only made more irritable by having different narrators on the audio book。 Why do they do that?
